SGPC again expands itself

The SGPC today promoted five employees as assistant secretaries and two as additional secretaries, making the mini parliament of the Sikhs top-heavy.

Avtar Singh today issued the promotion orders, which were his first order after becoming SGPC president for the third consecutive year. Interestingly, the SGPC had four full-fledged secretaries against one post during the tenure of Gurcharn Singh Tohra, who reigned the SGPC for 27 years. With the new promotions, the number of assistant secretaries and additional secretaries has risen to 15 and eight, respectively.

Though the SGPC chief has claimed that the promotions will not put any additional burden on the exchequer of the SGPC, insiders say the newly promoted employees will be entitled to use the additional facilities like telephone, official vehicle etc.

Their photos in the 1941 and 1942 Wallulah, Willamette's yearbook, show them beaming with confidence and pride.

At least three of them were raised in the area, Watanabe in Salem and the Oye siblings in Independence.

Today they would be in their 80s, but nine are deceased.

Kurita, a retired surgeon, lives in Modesto, Calif., but is unable to attend the events on Monday and Tuesday.

"I have nothing but good memories," the 84-year-old said by phone. "I'm sad to hear I'm the only one surviving. I was surprised to hear Willamette was doing this, pleasantly surprised."

Family members of all but one of the nisei were invited to campus on the 66th anniversary of President Franklin Roosevelt signing Executive Order 9066, which resulted in the forcible internment of 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry.

Leap Wireless Grows, Cuts Loss … and Shares Climb

Its 52-week range is $29.87 to $99.04. Leaps Nasdaq symbol is LEAP.

For the full year, Leap had total revenue of $1.35 billion, up 46 percent from all of 2006 when it had $956.4 million in revenue.

The net loss for the year was $75.9 million, compared to a net loss of $24.4 million in 2006.

Citing Leaps gains when measured by operating income before depreciation and amortization, CEO Doug Hutcheson called 2007 a good year.

Our 2007 results demonstrated the success of our growth initiatives and continuing customer acceptance of our unlimited value proposition, Hutcheson said.

At the end of December, Leap said it had 2.86 million customers nationally, but expected to have 3 million by Feb. 28. The Cricket wireless service is offered in 23 states and holds licenses in 35 of the top 50 national markets.

A Million Iraqi Victims… Do They Deserve an International Tribunal?

Over one million Iraqi citizens have died since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003 according to the recent survey conducted by (ORB) Opinion Research Business. The survey found that 20% of the Iraqi citizens had had at least one death in their household as a result of the conflict, rather than natural causes. Narmin Othman, Iraqi Minister of State for Women's Affairs said in an interview to Al-hayatt newspaper (1/2/2008) "over two million Iraqi women lost their husbands and were left without any supporter for themselves and their kids. They became victims of tyranny, poverty and exploitation". US Department of Defense announced that about 600 Iraqi children, most between 15 and 17 years old, are detained in the Camp Cropper prison, which is a holding facility for security detainees operated by the United States Army near Baghdad International Airport.

Woomail Wants To Woo You Away from Spam

The recipient gets an e-mail saying, "I only read secure e-mail" and a link that takes the recipient to a reply page on the Woomail server , so that no part of the communication travels through cyberspace.

Putting Users in Control

John Halloran, a Puerto Rico-based precious-metals dealer, created Woomail after struggling with the huge amount of spam his brokers and office staff were dealing with. He said that his goal was to put users in charge of their communications, inbound and outbound.

"The problem was that anyone in the world can send you communication from anywhere, and I can't stop them from sending it to my servers," he said. "If I can get them to come to me by typing in a URL or Woo to Woo message, then I can control communications on my server and so I can prevent fraudulent use." (A "Woo to Woo" message is one in which both parties have Woomail accounts.) Sending a message from within the site cannot be done without a challenge-and-response question, putting the kibosh on automated spammers.
