When you cut to the chase, get to the grit, Mardi Gras is all about people with money, status and style letting the rest of us know they have money, status and style, and that their children will have money, status and style because that is the way God intended it. More or less. At least in Mobile. Sure, New Orleans Mardi Gras is bigger, or so I am told. But Mobile's seems, well, more refined, more sedate, more anal. Where New Orleans has women flashing their charms for beads, Mobile frowns on such. (A few years back, when one young girl in the City by the Bay did expose herself for trinkets, she was arrested and there was scandal.) Of course there are the now-famous "Third Float Girls," spirited young things collected together and placed three back so Mystic Society's arbiters of good taste can control them if they get too rowdy.

They eventually filed a missing persons report with Albuquerque police on Feb. 28, 2005. The report said she'd last been living with Paul Eugene Perea, then 28. Woodman was Perea's girlfriend, though he was married at the time, according to court records. Police have not named suspects in the case and would not comment on Perea. Perea, now 32, is serving 14 years in prison for raping a 13-year-old girl in January 2005, the same month Woodman's skeleton was found. He also served time at age 19 after he was convicted of beating his abusive father to death at an Albuquerque softball park.
