The initiative must have failed, because today you don't see many kids in school uniforms and the issue seems to have dropped from the media radar screen.

It is the nature of much so-called educational innovation to capture the imagination with or without adequate evidence to support claims. People can intuitively agree that having same sex classes might help some kids, but when you look at what studies exist to support this, there isn't much.

Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 is the landmark legislation that bans sex discrimination in schools, whether it is in academics or athletics. It states:

"No person in the U.S. shall, on the basis of sex be excluded from participation in, or denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving federal aid."

This latest initiative appears to have started when the US Department of Education announced that Title IX restrictions would not apply to experiments in grouping students on the basis of sex. I can find no reason why federal law is being waived for this except that many feel that Title IX, the gender equity law, applies only to how much money schools should be spending on school sports.

Towns rethink board meeting security

Charlie Coleman routinely attend that city's board sessions.

In Bartlett, all of the police hierarchy -- Chief Gary Rikard, Assistant Chief Glen Williamson and the department's three inspectors -- attend the meeting in uniform, providing a significant police presence at that city's bimonthly meetings. Part of the latest security evaluation includes whether the brass should position themselves in different areas of the chamber.

Germantown Police Chief Richard Hall used to sit on one of the first two rows during meetings but has now moved to the dais so he can look out over the crowd. The city added two officers at Monday night's meeting due to the Kirkwood incident.

"People's emotions take over and you never know what can happen," Lawton said.

There have been times when elected officials, even in the quiet suburbs, faced matters that stirred a crowd to the point that leaders wanted more protection or crowd control.

Naples-Fort Myers Greyhound Track marks 50th with $50,000 race

The $50,000 Greyhound Classic in Bonita Springs on Saturday night was either the greatest night in the history of Southwest Florida dog racing or simply the latest ugly chapter in the long history of a sport that some say tolerates animal abuse, encourages binge drinking and feeds gambling addictions.

In the end, it was 2-1 underdog “Invincible Son" that streaked away with a win in the featured race of the evening at Naples-Fort Myers Greyhound Track.

Earlier in the day, a small group of people gathered outside the track to protest what they claim is inhumane treatment of the dogs.

“They were saying that a lot of these dogs are abused, but my girlfriend works for an animal services organization and she said a lot of them get adopted," said racing fan Adam Andrew of Fort Myers, owner of various Ralph's Seafood locations throughout Lee County.

-The worst month for sports is what were going through right now. The NBA is hitting the mid-season and there is yet to be any real excitement. You have the NFL that just got over a month ago, and yes, we're all sad because that marks the end of football for another 6-7 months. College Football recruiting is always fun, but we all know that in a sense it is just a waiting game that is boring. We have College Basketball hitting conference schedules real hard which is truely fun to watch, but we then enter the conference tournaments and they mean nothing. MLB isen't even heard of in this month, and NASCAR has qualifying on the week before Daytona. Isen't that just interesting. The month of February is a complete let-down. This month is almost worthless in the world of sports. I mean, the NBA season may be shaping up, but there is another 40 games to be played.
